POP-UP ORIGAMI ROOF

子どもたちが相撲の練習を続けられるよう、土俵の上にかかる9×9mの膜屋根を設計した。

施行時や強風時、積雪時は伏せておくことで、支保工不要、足場不要、超軽量化、低コスト化などを可能にした。

設計の背景には、折り紙⇄テンセグリティの考察と、弓形に曲げた梁による変形追従できる張力導入機構の挑戦がある。

2024年10月現在、2度の大型台風にも耐え、問題なく使用されている。

So that children could keep practicing sumo, a 9×9m membrane roof was designed over the sumo ring (dohyo). It can be laid flat during construction, high winds, or snowfall, eliminating the need for scaffolding or temporary supports while achieving extreme lightness and low cost. The design draws on a study of the relationship between origami and tensegrity, and on a tensioning mechanism using arched beams that flex and adapt to deformation.

As of October 2024, the roof has withstood two major typhoons and remains in trouble-free use. Presented at IASS2024, the international conference held in Zurich.
