A self-standing, spiral membrane structure spanning 6 meters was installed in the spiral atrium designed by Fumihiko Maki. Known technically as a "membrane tensegrity structure," this system rises from a flat plane into three dimensions as struts are fixed while stretching an elastic membrane. Because the struts never touch one another — held in equilibrium purely by the membrane's tension — they appear to float in mid-air. In Buckminster Fuller's words, it is like "islands of compression in an ocean of tension."

Paintings by the artist Sawako Nasu were hung and leaned inside the structure; their weight further stabilizes the form. The result is a shell-like spiral with openings far larger than conventional membrane structures could achieve.
